Gyudon

Big bowl of rice with beef. "Beef bowl." 牛丼。

Also called "Nikudon" (meat bowl) or "Gyumeshi" (beef rice).

One of the popular “donburi” dishes where various kinds of ingredients are served in a large bowl on a bed of hot white rice. Gyudon consists of finely cut slices of juicy beef which are simmered with onions in a sauce made from soy sauce to which Japanese stock (dashi), sake and mirin have been added. The sauce has a mildly sweet flavor. Served with side dish of pickles (benishoga).

This dish is extremely popular in Japan and everywhere in the country you will find specialist gyudon-restaurants. Trademark dish of cheap chain restaurants as Yoshinoya and Matsuya.
